Foreign Ministry welcomes Parliament's approval of Somalia's EAC membership

    Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has welcomed the approval of the treaty agreement for the country's accession to the East African Community (EAC) by the House of People of the Federal Parliament.

    In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, the Ministry emphasized that the significant step taken marks Somalia's progression towards becoming an official member of the regional economic bloc.

    "The approval by the House of People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia underscores a crucial milestone in Somalia's integration into the East African Community, signaling a strategic move towards regional cooperation and economic development," the Ministry added.

    Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation views this approval as a positive indication of Somalia's commitment to regional integration and cooperation with neighboring countries.

    "The accession treaty agreement is seen as a pivotal plan towards furthering Somalia's engagement within the East African Community and fostering closer ties with member states."

    After months of lobbying to join the regional bloc, Somalia was admitted to the East African Community on December 15, 2023. Somalia's integration into the EAC is a massive step for the Horn of Africa nation, but it did not come easy.
