Landmine explosion wounds ten at tea shop in Hiiraan's Bulaburte district

Saturday August 31, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — At least ten people were wounded when a landmine exploded at a tea shop in the Bulaburte district of Hiiraan region on Saturday afternoon.

The shop, a popular spot frequented by regional security forces and local clan militia members, was the target of the attack.

Security forces immediately investigated the scene, but no arrests have been made. While no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, al-Shabab militants are known to carry out such attacks in Hiiraan and other regions of Somalia.

The landmine explosion occurred just hours after a similar incident in Mogadishu's Garasbaley district, where al-Shabab militants are suspected of setting off explosions that ignited a fire, destroying the Tabeela Sheikh Ibrahim neighbourhood market. It was the second market fire in the capital within a week.

The militants' increased activity highlights the persistent threat they pose, mainly as they target locations frequented by security personnel and civilians alike.
