Baidoa (HOL) — The Somali National Army, supported by local militias, has launched a renewed military offensive against Al-Shabaab in the Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, targeting the extremist group's remaining strongholds in the western parts of both areas.
According to Sheikh Abukar Moalim Mohamud, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, the offensive is part of a broader strategy to reclaim territory and restore government control. "Our forces are committed to liberating these areas to ensure that essential government services can reach the communities still under Al-Shabaab's influence," Sheikh Abukar stated.
The regions of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle have been pivotal in the ongoing struggle against Al-Shabaab, as they were among the first to rise in resistance. The current mobilization marks a necessary phase in the nationwide efforts to eradicate the group, which has long disrupted stability in Somalia.
The success of this offensive could pave the way for a more stable and secure Somalia.
