Ports Minister Ahmed Yasin Salah announced negotiations with India regarding the transfer, aiming to address legal and security concerns.

On Saturday, the Indian Navy freed the crew of the MV Ruen, a vessel hijacked by Somali pirates in December 2023. During a standoff, the navy's INS Kolkata faced 35 pirates, leading to their surrender and the ship's liberation. The 17-member was rescued unharmed from the Maltese-flagged vessel owned by the Bulgarian company Navibulgar.

Analysts believe the pirates wanted to use the MV Ruen as a launch point for further attacks.

The latest hijacking incident comes at a time when piracy is on the rise, posing a threat to regional security. The issue has attracted international attention, prompting the UN's International Maritime Organization to call for stronger maritime security measures. The resurgence harks back to the early 2010s when Somali pirates posed a significant threat to global shipping.
