Somali Parliament denies allegations of staff involvement in Mogadishu al-Shabab attack

Sunday March 17, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia’s Lower House of Parliament has refuted reports that one of its staff members was involved in Friday’s al-Shabab attack on SYL hotel in Mogadishu, which killed at least three soldiers and wounded 27 others.

Reports on social media suggest that one of the attackers was carrying the identity card of a parliament staff member to navigate streets and pass security checkpoints more easily. These reports added that the identity card belonged to Liban Mohamed Mohamud, whose job was a technician in the Somali Parliament.

The Secretary-General of the Parliament, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdulle Jaabiri, clarified that the identity card shared on social media was fake, stating that the person was not a member of Parliament staff.

The accusations against the parliament on social media come after a driver of the former speaker of the Somali Parliament, Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, joined al-Shabab in December 2022.

Somali government leaders have pledged a prompt investigation into the attack. Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and President Mohamud separately inspected the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Headquarters in Mogadishu in the last two days.
