United States praises Puntland's historic one-person-one-vote elections

Sunday July 28, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - The United States has congratulated the leaders and people of Puntland on the recent local council elections in the Nugaal region.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu praised the elections as a significant step towards effective governance and democracy in Somalia, noting the participation of thousands of Puntlanders in the voting process.

The elections were initially scheduled for the previous year but were postponed due to significant security concerns and political disputes. These included allegations of election materials being seized and destroyed, and accusations against President Said Abdullahi Deni. Opposition groups criticized Deni for allegedly diverting funds for campaign purposes and unlawfully amending the constitution, which they claimed deepened community divisions and conflicts.

Despite these challenges, the political climate has reportedly improved since President Deni's re-election.

Last week, the United Nations also congratulated the people of Puntland for peacefully conducting the elections in the Nugaal region's Garowe, Dangoroyo, and Godobjiraan districts. The milestone marks Puntland as the first regional state in Somalia to hold such elections for local government councils.
