Somalia's PM accuses Ethiopia of land grab, not maritime interest

Thursday July 4, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, has accused Ethiopia of pursuing a false narrative to justify land acquisition. He stated that Ethiopia's goal is not to access Somali ports or invest in maritime facilities but to claim Somali territory.

"Ethiopia's objective is to establish a military base in the Red Sea to seize control of the country," Prime Minister Hamza said. "Our stance is clear. We went to Kenya and told them we would not negotiate over our sea. They took us to Turkey, and we told them again that we are never ready for any talks that compromise our sovereignty."

Hamza emphasized that Ethiopia needs to correct its approach and abandon false historical claims aimed at interfering with Somali land. He noted that if historical grievances are examined, Somalia is the only party with unresolved claims against Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister added that any talks between Somalia and Ethiopia that do not touch on Somalia's crucial interests are welcome.
