Mogadishu (HOL) - The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, on Thursday rejected any act violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia following Ethiopia’s port deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
The General Secretariat renewed the solidarity of the OIC with the Federal Republic of Somalia and stressed the need to respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to safeguard security, peace, and stability in the region.
The dispute between the two countries sparked off on January 1, following the signing of a port deal between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
Somalia accused landlocked Ethiopia of attacking its sovereignty after Addis Ababa reached the agreement with Somaliland that gives long-sought access to the Red Sea.
OIC's support for Somalia comes hours after the United States rejected international recognition for breakaway Somaliland and called for calm following the region’s leaders signing a deal with Ethiopia.
