Baidoa (HOL) - Southwest Regional State Security Minister Hassan Abduqadir Mohamed and other officials visited areas along the Ethiopia-Somalia border in the Bakool region on Wednesday to intensify anti-al-Shabab operations.
The security officials of the Southwest regional administration are planning to initiate the second phase of military operations against al-Shabaab, which will soon commence in the Southwest areas.
"In the areas bordering Somalia and Ethiopia in the Bakool region, we are here to accelerate the second phase of the operation against al-Shabaab, which will commence shortly in the Southwest," said Minister Hassan Abdukadir.
The minister and accompanying officials held meetings to expedite the second phase of the operation with various sections of the population living in the areas of Yeed, Aato, Washaq, and other areas.
Since last year, the Somali government's military operations in parts of the country have made significant progress against the militants. Al-Shabab has relinquished territories and major towns in the central Somali regions of Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle, Galmudug, and Southwest State.
