Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali Council of Ministers has announced a half-million-dollar fund for the victims of last week's al-Shabab attack on Mogadishu's Lido Beach, which killed 40 people and wounded over 200 others.

The cabinet revealed the funds during an emergency meeting in Mogadishu on Tuesday night, chaired by Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre.

"This money is intended to support the injuries and the reconstruction of the lives of the people who suffered from the brutal attack that massacred innocent people. The government has taken measures to ensure the safety of the people," said a news release from the Prime Minister's Office.

The terror attack on Lido Beach resulted in the deaths of 40 civilians, mostly young people who were enjoying the beach, and injured 247 others. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack.

Prime Minister Barre announced on Sunday that several army officers were arrested in response to the attack. He stated that strict measures were being taken to hold the officers on duty around Lido Beach accountable but did not provide details about the number of officers arrested or their identities.
