Nairobi (HOL) - One of six suspects accused of participating in the gang rape of a newlywed woman was arraigned on Tuesday in Wajir City Court, located in northeastern Kenya.

The suspect, who was arrested yesterday, denied all charges against him. Magistrate Roslyn Oganyo ordered that he remain in police custody until the trial concludes, with the next hearing scheduled for next week.

Authorities are searching for five additional suspects believed to be involved in the incident. The case has drawn attention from local women's rights groups, with activists attending the trial to advocate for the victim.

The assault reportedly occurred as the victim was travelling to a medical center in Wajir. According to Daynaba, a relative of the victim, the woman was abducted by her driver, who then called other men to join him. "They diverted from the route, covered her face with her hijab, gagged her, and tied her legs," Daynaba recounted, sharing details provided by the victim.

The suspects are known to reside in the same community as the victim, which has added to the tension and urgency in resolving the case. "Their families are well-known here," Daynaba added.

The attack underscores the persistent issue of sexual violence in Wajir District, where rape cases, particularly against teenage girls, are frequently reported. The presiding judge emphasized that those found guilty of rape or abuse would face strict legal consequences.

No legal representation has been assigned to the accused at this point. The next court appearance is set for April 18.

Rape cases are a frequent occurrence in Wajir District, particularly involving teenage girls. The judge assured that those found guilty of rape or abuse would be prosecuted.
