ACTED supports over 2.5 million in Somalia with cash assistance amid climate and conflict crises

Monday April 8, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – ACTED, supported by the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection (ECHO), addresses Somalia's severe climate and conflict challenges by offering Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) to more than 2.5 million impacted individuals. This crucial aid is part of the Somali Cash Consortium (SCC) effort, focusing on preventing famine and assisting communities displaced by ongoing crises.

Since October 2023, when the Deyr rains began, the project has targeted the most vulnerable, providing financial support to meet basic needs and enhance resilience. In North Kismayo, 1,000 households have benefited from three rounds of cash transfers, with ACTED's efforts centred on the Istanbul and El Jale Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) sites.

The MPCA program allows beneficiaries, like Nuura Jama*, a mother of 14 from Jilib district, to purchase necessities like food, water, and educational materials. After receiving three cash transfers totalling 90 USD, Nuura improved her family's living conditions and prepared for potential flooding. This story reflects the broader positive impact of the cash assistance, with 70% of recipients reporting that the aid effectively meets their monthly needs based on post-distribution monitoring assessments.

ACTED's project, running from April 2023 to March 2024, represents a vital effort to alleviate the immediate hardships and build long-term resilience among Somalia's most vulnerable communities.
