Thursday November 9, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama reiterated on Wednesday his call for the Somali people and international organizations to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the rains and floods in the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister, along with federal lawmakers, inspected the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) at the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA). This visit came a day after the agency reported that heavy rains and flash flooding in south-central Somalia had resulted in at least 29 deaths and the displacement of more than 305,000 people.

The SoDMA agency has prepared five boats as part of the relief efforts for those affected by the floods in Jubbaland state, and two boats were sent to Bardhere district today. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (OCHA) also stated that it is working to evacuate about 2,400 people stranded in the flood in the Luuq district of the Gedo region.

The flooding of the Jubba River in the Gedo region has impacted major districts, including Luuq, Dolow, Garbaharey, Bardher, and El Wak. Additionally, the rains have affected the Afmadow and Jamame districts in the Lower Juba region of Jubbaland State.

In response to the critical situation, the Somali federal government declared a state of emergency on Monday. Emergency responders are actively working to reach those still trapped by floodwaters in various Jubbaland and South West States districts.
