Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Cabinet of Ministers announced that there had been a 70% reduction in al Shabab attacks in the country. The Council praised the security forces for their increased anti-al Shabab operations.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre chaired the weekly cabinet meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday, during which the Council highlighted that the government had succeeded in stabilizing the capital during the last holy month of Ramadan.

During a town hall event in Mogadishu the previous night, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated that the government of the United Arab Emirates had trained and paid the salaries of the new government forces that secured the capital.

Somali government forces, supported by local clan militia forces, have launched a fresh offensive against Al-Shabaab since August 2022, during which al-Shabab lost control of several main towns and villages to the joint forces.

Last month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced initiating the second phase of military operations against the extremist group Al-Shabab. This new phase aims to eradicate the militant group from its remaining strongholds.

In addition, the Council of Ministers approved a cooperation agreement for aviation and air services between Somalia and Kenya, which the two countries renewed.
