Minneapolis (HOL) - Abdirahman Kahin, owner of Afro Deli & Grill, embodies the American Dream through his dedication to hard work and perseverance. Emigrating from Djibouti and opening his first restaurant in Minneapolis' Cedar-Riverside neighbourhood 13 years ago, Kahin recently received the prestigious National Small Business Person of the Year award from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House.

Kahin's journey to success started with a single restaurant and has since expanded to four Afro Deli & Grill locations in the Twin Cities, specializing in African cuisine. His innovative approach combines traditional African foods with Indian and Mediterranean flavours, creating a unique and delicious dining experience. "I believe in the American dream," said Kahin. "I believe everything's possible if you work hard. And especially if you work hard and as a small business, there are no limits."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kahin's business adapted by shifting to grab-and-go products, allowing his restaurants to stay open. His commitment to the community shone through as he expanded his workforce and provided free meals to the elderly and disabled in South Minneapolis' East African immigrant community. Second Gentleman of the United States Douglas Emhoff praised Kahin's efforts, stating, "They fed thousands of people during COVID, and what's amazing is they're still doing it."

Afro Deli & Grill's success also extends to partnerships with Meals on Wheels and Minnesota Central Kitchen, providing home-delivered meals to vulnerable community members. Moreover, the business supplies eight stores in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and 15 other stores across the Twin Cities area.

On May 3rd, Emhoff and Small Business Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman visited one of Afro Deli's locations in St. Paul as part of National Small Business Week. The event showcased Kahin's hardworking staff as they prepared 600 meals for delivery to a low-income apartment complex in downtown St. Paul.

Kahin's inspiring story has resonated with many, including Afro Deli customer Claire Thomas, who said, "I mean, it's really exciting for the business. It seems really well deserved."

With the National Business Person of the Year award in hand, Kahin is motivated to open more restaurants and remain engaged with the community. He hopes to continue growing his business with the help of the SBA and the Biden-Harris Administration. "This is for the community, for East Africa, for the Somali community and for the people of colour," said Kahin.
