Kismayo (HOL) - At least ten fatalities have been reported, and three people are missing in the Bardhere District, Gedo Region, as of March 21, due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall on March 20. The situation is expected to persist as response and recovery operations continue. The region is forecasted to experience isolated thunderstorms that could trigger additional flooding and hamper relief efforts.
There is a risk of flooding in areas near rivers, streams, and creeks, and flooding may occur in urban areas with inadequate stormwater drainage systems. Flash flooding could also impact areas downstream from large reservoirs or rivers. Landslides are possible in mountainous regions with saturated soil.
Mandatory evacuations may be ordered in flood-prone areas, and utility networks such as electricity and telecommunications services could be disrupted. Transportation is also affected, with flooding and debris flows making some bridges and roadways impassable.
Business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas due to flood damage or evacuation orders. Authorities are urging residents to avoid driving and to charge their battery-powered devices in the event of prolonged electricity outages.
