Prominent elder gunned down in Galkayo

    Galkayo (HOL) - Gunmen assassinated a prominent traditional elder, Abdi Aden Said, in Galkacyo on Saturday night, officials said.

    The elder was killed after leaving the Ramadan Mosque following evening prayer.

    Puntland security forces quickly arrived at the scene. However, they failed to make any arrests. Said's murder comes as Galkayo's officials tightened security in the wake of several killings.

    No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

    The killing comes four days after thirteen individuals from terrorist groups Al-Shabaab and ISIS/Daesh were executed by firing squad in Somalia's northeastern semiautonomous state of Puntland.

    The executions, ordered by a military court, occurred simultaneously around 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) in Galkayo, Garowe, and the state's commercial capital, Bosaso.

    The murder of Abdi Aden Said is the latest incident highlighting the fragile security situation in Galkayo, where assassinations have become increasingly frequent.
