Nairobi (HOL) - Noordin Haji, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Kenya, was elected as the new President of the East African Association of Parliamentarians (EAAP) during the 10th annual general meeting in Kampala, Uganda, on Tuesday. Haji will take over from Sylvester Anthony Mwakitalu, Tanzania's DPP, who has led the association since 2019.

The conference's theme was "Transboundary Crime: Practical Approaches to Protecting Women and Children."

As the new President of the EAAP, Haji will lead efforts to promote regional integration, democracy, and good governance in East Africa. He will work closely with parliamentarians from the 12 member states of the EAAP, which include Burundi, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Haji plans to expand the membership to include prosecution authorities from Central and Southern African countries to combat transnational organized crimes. "Expanding this Association of Prosecutors will not only enhance our cooperation and collaboration but also enable us to collectively safeguard the most vulnerable among us and bring those who commit these crimes to justice," he said.

The EAAP Constitution was presented to the new President during the closing ceremony of the three-day conference.
