Hargeisa (HOL) - Speaker of the Somaliland House of Elders, Saleban Mohamud Aden, said that his House is working to resolve the issues in Las Anod, noting that it is not his personal responsibility.
Speaking to the media in Hargeisa on Saturday, the speaker made contradictory statements about the Las Anod issues, first saying that he would work to find a solution to the conflict and later saying that it was not his personal responsibility.
The speaker said he would welcome the Las Anod conference if the elders were working for the interest of the Sool region. When asked what he would do if the meeting decided against Somaliland, he said it would not matter to him.
Saleban Mohamud Aden, Speaker of the Somaliland House of Elders, has been working with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi to resolve the conflict in Las Anod recently. He stated at a house meeting that he and the house members would discuss the Las Anod issue.
The traditional leaders from the Sool, Sanaag and Ayn regions gathered in Las Anod to discuss the future of their territory on Saturday.
The supreme traditional clan chief of the Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn regions, Garad Jama Garad Ali, opened the high-level meeting, which was attended by the majority of the elders from the three regions.
Observers quickly noted that the conference venue featured the Somalia national flag, which hinted that the meeting's expected agenda would be against Somaliland.
Garad Jama accused Somaliland of being responsible for the recent events in Las Anod, where over 20 civilians were killed during anti-Somaliland protests.
