Mogadishu (HOL) - A military court in Mogadishu sentenced a soldier to death on Sunday for murdering a man for less than a quarter dollar.
Abubakar Mohamed Nourani, a well-liked 65-year-old resident from the Hamarweyne district, was
shot dead by the government tax collection officer on Tuesday afternoon in front of dozens of onlookers for failing to pay five thousand Somali shillings - or about 20 cents USD.
The murder sent shockwaves throughout the community, with many Somalis - particularly in the diaspora - stunned that government soldiers could kill someone for such a small amount of money.
Nourani's family and friends, who were present at the court proceedings, demanded that the court deliver swift justice and sentence the rogue soldier to death.
They thanked the court for the death sentence, saying they were satisfied with how the security and judicial services handled Nourani's case.
