President Deni says Puntland ready for a “military and political solution” to Las Anod situation

Tuesday January 3, 2023

Garowe (HOL) - Puntland state President Said Abdullahi Deni said that his region is ready for a “military and political solution” to the situation in Las Anod, a town in Somaliland's east disputed between breakaway Somaliland and Puntland.

At a press conference in Garowe on Monday, President Deni rejected criticism that he was busy with election issues as the security situation in  Las Anod drastically deteriorated last week.

Deni said that the politicians and intellectuals of Las Anod need to come up with a united cause regarding the town's situation.

"If Somaliland does not accept the calls of the people of Las Anod, who demand that Somaliland leave the town and the entire Sool region, Puntland is ready to take all possible actions," said Deni.

Residents of Las Anod town began to flee their homes on Sunday following the continued clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces in Las Anod, the administrative capital of the Sool region.

At least 20 people have been killed in Las Anod since the beginning of the anti-government protests last Tuesday in response to the local administration's failure to deal with assassinations after a Wadani Party official was killed.

Abdifatah Abdullahi Abdi Hadrawi was shot dead on Monday evening after returning from the mosque.

Puntland regional government accused Somaliland of inflicting violence against protestors in Las Anod, calling on human rights organizations to monitor the situation.

Puntland Minister of Information, Eng. Mohamud Ayded Dirir described the crackdown on protestors as a massacre, stating that Somaliland forces deliberately killed civilian protesters.
