Heavy rains in Ethiopia raise water levels, prompting flood warnings in Somalia

Wednesday April 12, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's disaster management agency has issued a warning of possible flooding in the Shabelle and Jubba rivers as their water levels have increased.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency attributed the rising water levels to heavy rains that fell in the mountains of Ethiopia. The agency added that the surrounding areas could expect the river to flood every hour.

The warning has been issued for several areas, including the towns of Baladweyne and Jowhar, where the level of the Shabelle River has risen to 2.5cm, which could cause flooding at any time.

The statement urged residents to take precautionary measures and be prepared for any potential evacuation.

The agency also warned that parts of the Beledweyn town might experience floods during the next 96 hours, which could affect the lives and livelihoods of the communities living in the area.

The town of Beledweyn, located in the Hiiraan region, is frequently submerged in floodwater every year after the River Shabelle bursts its banks. This causes severe damage to houses, crops, and roads and displaces thousands of families.
