Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali police arrested a man on Tuesday for allegedly raping and kidnapping an 11-year-old girl in Mogadishu last week.
According to state-owned media, Yusuf Dahir Hassan, 53, was arrested in the Dharkeyley district and will face charges. Police officials confirmed that the incident occurred on March 31, 2023, but provided no additional information.
Somali police have pledged to combat sexual violence in the capital. In late December, police in Mogadishu arrested a young man in connection with a sexual assault of a 20-year-old woman in the Bardhere district of the Gedo region. Two other men are still wanted for the assault, which was captured on film by the perpetrators.
The video, which was posted on social media, showed one man holding the victim down while another attempted to rape her. A third suspect recorded the entire assault. The police have not announced if they have arrested the other wanted men.
