Clan elder shot dead in Mogadishu's Yaqshid district

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Gunmen in Mogadishu shot a clan elder from the Hiiraan region dead on Wednesday in the Yaqshid district.

    Hussein Hayow, a clan mediator or peacemaker, was shot in the upper body several times by at least two assailants. 

    He died on the scene.

    The shooters escaped after the killing, and security forces said they were investigating the homicide.

    Although no group has claimed responsibility, it is believed that Al Shabaab militants are targeting clan elders who are organising against the insurgent group, specifically the Hawadle and Habr Gedir clans.

    During a recent offensive in central Somalia, the Somali government said that at least 100 Al Shabaab fighters had been killed by the SNA and a regional militia known as Ma’awisley.
