Speakers of parliament meet with top Somali police and AU officials ahead of Sunday's presidential election

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's Lower and Upper House speakers on Saturday met with the joint parliamentary committee responsible for organizing the presidential election, top Somali police and AU officials in Mogadishu.

Lower House speaker Sheikh Adan Madobe and Upper House speaker Abdi Hashi Abdullahi discussed with the officials on election security ahead of Sunday's presidential election.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Fiona Lortan, the acting ATMIS Force Commander Maj Gen William Kitsao Shume, Somali police chief Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar, senior officials from the ATMIS mission, and other top Somali police officials.

The Lower House speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, instructed the security officials to work together to ensure a peaceful election.

On Saturday morning, Somali police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden announced at a press conference a 33-hour curfew on the capital Mogadishu that will keep almost all residents at home during a presidential election by lawmakers.

He added that the full curfew in the city, covering both traffic and people, from Saturday at 9:00 p.m. until Monday at 6:00 a.m.

The incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is facing 37 opponents in the vote, including two former presidents, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who analysts see as the frontrunners.
