UN Security Council condemns Al Shabaab attack on AU base in Somalia

Mogadishu (HOL) - The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the attack by al Shabaab on an AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Forward Operating Base in Elbaraf, Middle Shabelle region, on May 3.

In a statement, members of the Security Council paid tribute to the members of the Burundi National Defence Force who lost their lives in the battle against Al Shabaab.

At least 10 Burundian peacekeepers were killed in Tuesday's attack by Al-Shabaab, Burundi's army said Wednesday. Twenty-five soldiers were also injured, and five are missing, while 20 Al-Shabaab militants were killed, it said in a statement.

The members of the Security Council expressed their support for the efforts by the Federal Government of Somalia and ATMIS to counter the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.

“The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable, and bring them to justice.  They urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Federal Government of Somalia and all other relevant authorities in this regard”, said in the statement.
