Friday August 12, 2022

Toronto (HOL) - One man has been killed, and another is in critical condition on Thursday following what police believe was a targeted shooting at the funeral for a Toronto homicide victim.

York Regional Police say they were summoned to the Toronto Muslim Cemetery in Richmond Hill around 3:35 pm on Thursday following reports of gunshots.

"We received information that there was an active shooter and that we had a victim of a gunshot wound," Constable Maniva Armstrong said,

When they arrived, one victim was inside a car with at least five gunshot wounds, and another had also been shot several times. They were both hurried to a local hospital by ambulance.

According to Armstrong, three to four male suspects approached the victims before opening fire on them.

A 27-year-old male is still in a trauma centre suffering from critical injuries, according to the police, while the 26-year-old died later at the hospital.

According to York Region Police and cemetery officials, the double shooting occurred as nearly 60 mourners left a funeral service for Gidid Mohamed. Mohamed was gunned down in Toronto's west end early Tuesday morning at a social club close to Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue. A 37-year-old man was also seriously wounded and sent to the hospital during that shooting.

There is no threat to public safety, according to police, who believe the shooting was targeted.

"You never expect something like this to happen at any time, let alone during a funeral," Armstrong said. "This is going to impact all the people that were here today and in our community."

Police are actively searching for three to four individuals who fled the area northbound on Leslie Street in an older model SUV, but no further descriptions have been given.
