Jubaland Deputy VP says his government 'fully supports' PM's cabinet nominations

Friday August 5, 2022

Kismayo (HOL) - Jubaland's Deputy Vice-President Sultan Abdulkadir Haji Mohamud 'Lugadhere' says that his government approved of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre's selections for the federal Council of Ministers and called on Somalia's Parliament to confirm the nominations.

Lugadhere's comments come a day after the Vice President of Jubaland, Mohamud Sayid Adan, and the Vice President of Galmmudu said they were displeased at how the Prime Minister distributed power along clan lines.

The Deputy VP said in an interview with VOA Somali's morning program that passing the resolution to approve the 75-member cabinet - which included 26 cabinet ministers, 25 deputy ministers and 24 state ministers - was in the best interest of the Somali people.

"The country needs a functioning government that can help us forward. We need security. These are the main reasons that we support the new government."

Somalia's Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, is a life-long resident of Kismayo, the capital of Jubaland, and was a co-founder of the local university. Before being appointed PM, he worked as the chairman of the Jubaland Electoral Commission.
