Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for mortar attack on Villa Hargeisa

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Several mortars were fired in the vicinity of the Villa Hargeisa complex as the two Houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia were holding their first meeting on Monday.

    Reports say that some mortars hit in front of the Villa Hargeisa during a live session, which prompted lawmakers to pause briefly when one reportedly hit close to the building.

    At least eight people, including two security guards attached to the Wadajir opposition leader, Abdirahman Abdi Shakur Warsame, were injured in the mortar attack.

    Lawmakers said the mortar attack landed as the MPs ended the session and got out of the building.

    Somalia's Prime Minister condemned the attack as an act of terror aimed at intimidating parliament.

    "Today's attempt was a cowardly act aimed at intimidating the parliament, which is in its constitutional obligation to ensure the elections are complete soon," Roble said.

    Roble called on the army commanders to redouble their efforts to ensure security and prevent any attempt to destabilize the country, especially during the upcoming elections.

    The United Nations also condemned the mortar attack.

    In a tweet, the United Nations said it wishes a speedy recovery for the injured and stands firm with Somalis in their efforts to complete the electoral process and progress on national priorities.

    The al-Qaeda-linked militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the mortar attack. 

    Al-Shabaab also targeted lawmakers on Thursday during the swearing-in ceremony when they fired mortars at the Afisoni tent in Mogadishu. There were no casualties in that attack.
