Mogadishu (HOL) - Al Shabaab fighters said they destroyed three fuel tankers en route to Baledogle Airfield, a US military facility used for staging drone strikes and training Somali security services on Sunday.
The fuel convoy was attacked while passing through the Hawo Abdi area between Mogadishu and Afgoye, about 80 kilometres south of Baledogle, according to the group's spokesman, Abdiaziz Abu Musab.
Abu Musab added that one tanker escaped the ambush and fled towards Mogadishu.
Somali government officials said no one was killed or seriously injured in the attack.
Hit-and-run attacks have become a hallmark of Al Shabab's asymmetrical warfare against the internationally-backed Somali government.
On Saturday, Al Shabaab
attacked
an aid convoy travelling between Beledweyne and Mahas districts in the Hiiraan region, killing at least
22 people
.
The group claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming success in targeting a local militia.
According to local and government officials, the victims were civilians, including a group of five people killed by a landmine while on their way to rescue the first wave of victims.
