Beledweyne (HOL) - Federal and regional officials met in Mahas district on Tuesday for a high-level security meeting to discuss plans to accelerate the ongoing offensive against al Shabab in the Hiiraan.
Yusuf Dabaged, vice president of Hirshabelle, Mohamed Tahlil Bihi, commander of the infantry forces of the Somali National Army (SNA), as well as federal lawmakers, representatives from the region, and citizens of the Mahas district, were present at the meeting.
Officials issued a six-point statement pledging to accelerate operations against al Shabab and consolidate gains made in recently liberated areas.
To oversee finances and support, a four-person committee made up of Ali Jeyte Osman, MP Abdinasir Haji Shirwac, MP Abdirahman Gurey, and Ibrahim Sheelare was chosen.
Al Shabab has lost a lot of ground in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle over the last two months to the joint forces of the local militia and the government.
Over 50 villages in central Somalia were liberated by government forces supported by local militias during the operations, which resulted in the deaths of over a thousand militants.
