Former Puntland ministers warn against term extension for President Deni

Monday October 17, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Former Puntland minister of education Ali Haji Warsame and former finance minister Farah Ali Shire accused President Said Deni of intending to extend his term for two more years.

Both ministers, who were candidates in the 2019 election, said that the President was planning for the three political associations from the local council elections to give him an extension.

"When we met with the President, we advised him to clear that he would not be going the extension. However, it is becoming clear that the government is on the wrong side and does not want to move together," said Ali Haji Warsame.

Former finance minister, Farah Ali Shire, said the lack of consensus could destabilize Puntland, and President Deni would be responsible.

The politicians' statement came a day after registration awareness letters that were supposed to be delivered to different regions were burned in villages in the Nugal region.

Last week, President Said Abdullahi Deni agreed to fully participate in the upcoming local government elections with the opposition political associations following a meeting in Garowe.

President Deni has promised that each association will be given ten thousand dollars to help prepare for the elections. He added that $3,000 would be given to each organization every month.

The Puntland regional state election is expected to hold on January 8, 2024.
