President Mohamud inspected the training facility for the Air Force graduates.
At least 5,000 Somali trainees were secretly dispatched to Eritrea for training beginning in mid-August 2019 and continuing until June 2020.
The Eritrean government said that the recruits received rigorous training. Mohamud was accompanied by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, who welcomed the Somali president.
“Eritrea feels honoured and proud to contribute in training and in building the Somali national army,” he said, as cited by the Ministry of Information of Eritrea.
During a
previous visit
to Eritrea in July, President Mohamud promised that the troops would soon return home to participate in the offensive against al-Shabaab fighters. However, he did not commit to a timeline for their return.
