Soldiers shoot dead suspected militant laying IEDs in central Somalia

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Security forces have shot dead a man allegedly planting a landmine on a busy road in the central Somalia region of Hiiraan on Thursday.

    Somali National Army official told media that the suspected al-Shabab militant was killed during a security operation in Halgan district, about 60 kilometres west of Beledweyne town.

    There has been an uptick in roadside landmine attacks since Somali government forces, backed by local clan militias, launched their offensive against al-Shabaab in late Summer.

    Somalia's Ministry of Information confirmed that nearly 100 al-Shabab militants were killed in separate operations in El Gorof village in Somalia's central region of Galgadud and Basra district in the Lower Shabelle region over the last two days.
