Friday May 27, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Yasmin Abdi Farah has become the first female pilot in Somalia as a full captain since the collapse of the central Somali government in 1991.

On Wednesday, Yasmin Abdi flew from Mogadishu to Kismayo for Mandeeq Airlines. It was her maiden flight as a fully-fledged captain.

After successfully landing in Kismayo, she said, "It is my first day as a captain, and I landed at Sayid Mohamed Abdille Hassan International Airport. I had several landings at this airport, but I was always the first officer in the right seat."

Zeytuun, first officer, said that she was proud to see a woman captain the plane.

"I am pleased because today is our day; it is the day for Captain Yasmin."

For five years, Yasmin flew with many captains to the regions of Somalia.

It isn't easy to see a Somali girl pilot, but Yasmin Abdi Farah achieved great success with her aviation dreams.

One of her instructors, Captain Osman M. Amin, said that he was excited that Yasmin graduated and got her wings today. He said she is a role model for other young Somali girls.

One of the passengers on board said, "I am 78 years old; today it is my first time to see a female pilot, I wish Yasmin all the best, and she is a Somali girl, just like my daughters".

64-year-old Asli Hassan was Africa's first female military pilot, who piloted a plane in 1976. Asli trained in Italy and the United States in the 1970s before joining the Somali Air Force.
