The fire, which is believed to have been sparked by faulty electrical wiring in one of the shops, spread wildly to nearby stalls and took firefighters in the capital several hours to put out.

There are no reports of casualties, but several firefighters suffered minor injuries from battling the flame.

‎Abdiqani Dhalole, the emergency director of the Banadir region, said the fire caused injuries to some firefighters. ‎

‎"Some of the firefighters who were busy putting out the fire suffered minor injuries, but they are superficial wounds, and we expect them to recover," said Abdiqani Dhalole‎

Hawo Ahmed, one of the traders who owned a stall n the market, said that the fire burned through everything and that nothing could be salvaged.

The Banadir regional government said that it is investigating the cause of the blaze and assessing the damages, which can easily run into the millions.

A meeting is expected on Friday in Mogadishu to discuss how to assist affected vendors.

Last month, a major fire erupted in central Hargeisa at a busy market that employed more than 12,000 locals. While there were no casualties in the Waheen Market blaze, authorities have estimated pegged the economic impact of the blaze at $2bn.
