Airport officials in Mogadishu announce temporary closure during presidential election

Sunday May 15, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Authorities at Mogadishu's international airport have suspended all flights to and from the capital until Sunday's presidential elections have concluded.

According to a NOTAM notice, the aiport will be closed from 9:00PM on May 14 and will re-open at 6:00am on May 16.

Next door to the airport at the heavily fortified Afisioni airport hangar, lawmakers elect the next president of Somalia.

The temporary flight ban comes amidst a 33-hour curfew in Somalia's capital, forcing most of the city's nearly 3 million residents indoors. The strict curfew forbids all civilian vehicles from accessing public roads, including taxis and auto-rickshaws.

Flights will resume on Monday when the curfew is lifted.

Aden Adde International Airport services six daily international flights that leave the capital.
