Al-Shabaab fighter surrenders to Somali government forces in Gedo

Saturday June 11, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - NISA officers in the Gedo region have detained a man they suspect of being a member of Al-Shabaab for over a decade.

Abdiaziz Mohamud Diriye reportedly surrendered to government forces after fighting on behalf of the Al Qaeda-linked militant insurgency group for 12 years.

He confessed to Somali intelligence officials that he participated in several battles across many regions in Somalia.

Diriye also reportedly told NISA officers that he grew disillusioned by Al-Shabaab's harsh treatment of Somali civilians.

In recent weeks, the Somali military has reported an uptick in Al Shabaab fighters surrendering or being captured by government forces during a recent offensive.

Two weeks ago, the SNA killed seven Al Shabaab fighters near War-Ise village in the Middle Shabelle region.

Last Wednesday, Danab forces in Lower Juba arrested a senior Al-Shabaab operative, Mohamed Abdi Mukhtar - better known by his nom de guerre Sakhra - during a large-scale operation west of Kismayo. Four of Sakhrawi's bodyguards were killed during his arrest.

The group has been waging a deadly war against Somalia's internationally-backed government for over a decade. The US recently redeployed 500 troops to Somalia as a clear sign of its support for new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government to battle Al-Shabaab.
