Mortar shells land near airport in Mogadishu hours before president's inauguration

Mogadishu (HOL) -At least six mortar bombs were fired on Wednesday at Mogadishu's international airport, hours before the new president's inauguration, which will take place Thursday at the Afisiyoni tent inside the airport.

According to reports, the mortar shells landed near the airport at around 2:00 AM, with no casualties reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but al-Shabab is usually behind such attacks. The Somali government could also not be reached for comment.

Delegates from 20 countries, including Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and UAE State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday for Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's inauguration ceremony.

Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble announced a complete curfew in Mogadishu, covering both traffic and people, from Wednesday at 10:00 PM until Thursday at 5:00 AM.
