New Chairman of the Federal Electoral Commission elected

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) has elected Muse Ghelleh Yusuf as the new chairman of the Federal Elections Implementation Team Electoral (FEIT) following an election at the Aficio Tent in Mogadishu on Saturday.

The Yusuf defeated Abdiaziz Abdiaziz Aden in the closely contested race, edging his opponent by just three votes. Yusuf received 14 votes. In comparison, Abdirahman Abdiaziz received 11 votes.

The former election commission chairman, Mohamed Hassan Irro, was voted out of office in late December by the committee members, accusing him of corruption and political bias in favour of President Farmajo.  

Yusuf is now tasked with overseeing Somalia’s drawn-out indirect electoral process. Somalia’s Prime Minister announced that the parliamentary elections will be completed by Feb 25, leaving the new commissioner just over a month to complete the arduous task.
