Mogadishu (HOL) -  Somalia's Minister of Ports, Abdullahi Ahmed Jama Ilkajir, accompanied by State Minister of the Office of the Prime Minister, Hirsi Jama Gani and Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister, Mohamed Abukar Zubeir, received food aid from the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.

The donation compromised 40 containers of various food items for those hit hardest by the drought, which reached a grim milestone of more than 1 million people displaced.

Speaking at the handover ceremony at the Mogadishu seaport, Abdullahi Ilkajir, the minister of ports, applauded the government of the United Arab Emirates for the donation it gave to the Somali government on Saturday.

"Today, we received a food donation from our brotherly government of the United Arab Emirates, thousand tons of different foods intended for the people affected by the drought. We appreciate the United Arab Emirates'Emirates' assistance and anticipate receiving additional aid," Minister Abdullahi Ahmed Jama Ilkajir said.

The ambassador of the Arab Emirates to Somalia, Mohamed Ahmed Al-Othman, said that the donation consisted of 1000 tons of food.

Somalia has suffered through four unprecedented and consecutive failed rainy seasons, something that had never happened in the country's history.
