Somali President, Prime Minister call for peace after protestors killed in Somaliland

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called for peace in the breakaway region of Somaliland authorities after violent protests in the major towns of Somaliland.

    President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that l the leaders of Somaliland have a duty to restore order through traditional problem-solving methods.

    He complimented Somaliland for its ability to address its problems. "We take you as an example," he added.

    "(Somaliland) sat down alone and decided to tackle their problems. It is an example of what Somalis can achieve. Somaliland must not destroy its good name and honour. The fall-out will not be limited to you, Somaliland, but will affect all Somalis’” he added.

    President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called on the leaders of Somaliland to peacefully resolve the current conflict through dialogue and avert the need for foreign intervention.

    The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, also called for peace in the conflict in Somaliland.

    According to a statement from the Prime Minister's office, the federal government of Somalia is ready to participate in finding a peaceful solution to the electoral dispute in Somaliland.

    Clashes between opposition protesters and security forces in Somaliland on Thursday killed three people and injured 89, including dozens of police officers.

    Hundreds of angry supporters of the Wadani and UCID opposition parties took to the streets in at least three major cities — Hargeisa, Erigabo and Burao — setting up roadblocks, burning tires, and stoning cars and businesses.

    Security officials said the protesters defied a government order containing opposition protests to the opposition headquarters and specific locations.

    The protesters were chanting political slogans and holding signs demanding that Somaliland's upcoming elections be held in November as scheduled.

    A senior police official said in a press conference in Hargeisa that protesters with firearms, swords, and sticks clashed with the police, which caused the casualties.

    He added that 22 policemen and 21 civilians were wounded in Hargeisa, 29 policemen and six civilians were wounded in Buro town, and 11 policemen were injured in Erigabo town.
