Tuesday April 5, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) have issued a rare public warning on Tuesday about a potential plot by Al-Shabaab to assassinate President Farmajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.

A statement posted on NISA's official Twitter account said an Al-Shabaab leader named Mohamed Mahir was orchestrating the conspiracy. The intelligence group did not provide additional information to identify the alleged mastermind.

"We have informed the National Authorities of the threat posed by the AS terrorists to the President and the Prime Minister. Mohamed Mahir, a senior member of AS, is coordinating the plan. We are monitoring everyone involved. "NISA said in a statement.

NISA reported that they shared the information with senior officials.

The statement comes less than a week after Prime Minister Roble publicly stated that he had threatening text messages that connected the assassination of lawmaker Amina Mohamed to the disappearance and likely murder of former intelligence agent Ikran Tahlil. The PM claimed he received the menacing text messages after he endorsed the sacking of a member of Hirshabelle's State Election Implementation Team (SEIT).

NISA's warning comes as Somalia's election nears completion, with the inauguration of new MPs set for the 14th of this month. Any fresh  electoral crisis has the potential to further delay the election which is already behind schedule.
