Somali students association leader Maryam Hussein elected to Parliament in Norway

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somali-born female student association leader Maryam Abdi Hussein has been elected MP in Norway, becoming the first ethnic Somali to rise to the position.

Before her election, Maryam served as the Somali Foreign Students Society leader and has been actively involved in politics in the Nordic nation.

Former Prime Minister Hassan Khaire hailed Maryam’s election, calling her achievement historic.

“The new member of parliament and all Somalis living in Norway, I send congratulations on the historic success.”

Khaire said the Somali student association Maryam headed had produced successful leaders since it was founded in 1993.

Maryam joins the growing list of Somalis who have risen into national politics in foreign countries.

Among them is Ilhan Omar is currently serving her second term as a congresswoman in the US.
