Minor admitted after brothers set him ablaze inside Mandera home

Wednesday October 27, 2021

Nairobi (HOL)- A minor who is a Kenyan of Somali origin is fighting for his life at Mandera Teaching and Referral Hospital after his two brothers set him ablaze in their house.

Police say that the minor, a class seven pupil at Kamor Primary School in the North Eastern County, had been named a witness in a case where one of his brothers was accused of stealing a mobile phone.
When the two brothers, identified by police as Ibrahim Ahmed and Yusuf Ahmed, learnt that the boy had been lined up as a witness in the matter, they hatched a plan to end his life by setting him ablaze.

Kenya’s top investigator in charge of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, said that the duo lured the boy before rolling the 14-year-old up in a mattress doused in petrol and setting it on fire.

“After setting him ablaze, the two brothers immediately went into hiding, leaving their little brother for dead,” Kinoti in a statement said.

However, as the fire was spreading so fast across the house, it attracted the attention of locals and the police who rescued the boy who suffered significant burns.

Detectives said they had launched a manhunt for the two brothers because they immediately went into hiding after the incident.

A local Yusuf Hassan said that the brothers had been doing good, and he did not believe that such a thing could happen.

“This is absurd, such an incident is horrible, and we as locals condemn it,” Hassan said.
