Somali Supreme Court says it will hear election cases

Friday July 16, 2021

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Chief Justice of Somalia's Supreme Court, Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, has said that the Supreme Court will hear any complaints lodged against the Federal Electoral Commission.

Bashe said it would be illegal for the federal and state governments not to allow the courts to adjudicate over election cases.

"The Supreme Court is ready to hear any appeal that arises from an administrative decision made by the electoral commissions," said Bashe.

The 39-year-old Chief Justice made the remarks during the final day of a judicial conference in Mogadishu.

President Farmajo appointed Bashe in May 2018 after sacking Ibrahim Idle Suleiman, who insisted that the firing was done without proper procedures.

Bashe's statement comes as the country prepares for national elections, which many expect to be fiercely contested.

Somalia has no constitutional court - or similar dispute resolution mechanism -  in place to hear disagreements over the elections.
