GURIEL (HOL) - Galmudug and federal government forces Saturday afternoon took control of key installations in Guriel town in fierce fighting with Ahlu Sunna Waljamaa which is reportedly still pushing back the joint forces.Multiple sources in the town located in the central Somalia state of Galmudug said the forces had managed to hold control of the police station and the district headquarters.
Heavy fighting is however still going on in the eastern part of the town, sources added.
The joint forces stormed the town Saturday morning sparking heavy fighting with Ahlu Sunna which has been in control of the town since the first week of October.
There are fears of civilian casualties and displacement of populations as fighting rages on.
The UN said on Thursday over 100,000 people had since been displaced in Guriel as a result of the military buildups.
