Galkayo (HOL) - A 4o-year-old man who was among the hundreds forcibly repatriated from Las Anod last week has passed away on Wednesday from COVID-19, according to health officials in Puntland.
Before passing away, the patient was admitted to Galkayo General Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Authorities in Puntland say that the death has raised fears that more people travelling in the convoy from the Sool region may have been exposed to the virus, prompting medical officials to screen the resettled people in Garowe to make sure they were safe.
Health officials say that at least 48 people who arrived from Las Anod have tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hrs.
The federal ministry of health announced Wednesday that Puntland had recorded 48 COVID-19 cases in the last 72 hours. Out of the 323 cases recorded nationwide, 241 were traced to Somaliland.
The government also reported that 15 people had died in the last three days bringing the national death tally to 1,152.
Authorities in the breakaway state of Somaliland forcibly removed hundreds of people from Kisamyo who originally hailed from southern Somalia without warning.
