Somali oud maestro and composer Jiim Muumin is dead

MOGADISHU (HOL) - Prominent Somali musician and oud composer Jiim Sheikh Muumin who honed his mastery of the trade at the golden era of Somali music in the 1960s and rose into rose star status in later years has bowed out. He was 76.
Family and friends confirmed Muumin’s death Wednesday in Mogadishu after long illness. Muumin joined the entertainment industry in 1963 at the age of 17 after learning how to play the guitar and other musical instruments.
Muumin would later become the chief composer at Onkod Band which was among several other music groups such as Waaberi and Heegan bands.
He was born in Bulo Burte in Hiiraan region and composed songs for many musicians in Somalia besides his own compositions.
During one of his music tours in Hargeisa, he accidentally shot dead one person but his fans mobilised funds to compensate the family of the deceased and the matter was amicably resolved.
Muumin is regarded as one of the finest musicians and composers who shaped contemporary music in Somalia.
