General Saqadhi told journalists Monday the seized substances only account for about 10% of what comes into the country through smuggling networks.

“Between January and June, 26,800 litres of illicit liquor was seized by the police and this is not even 10% of what had sneaked into the country,” the police commandant said.

Additionally, General Saqadhi said 1,055 roles of hashish, sniffing powders and other liquid injections alongside 1,500 bottles of spirit were confiscated by police.

Alcoholic substances are illegal in Somaliland and Somalia.

The police head noted that 1001 suspects were arrested during the period. He did not however disclose further information about the smuggling network.

He added police had also identified cannabis farms in the outskirts of the capital Hargeisa.
